About Amr Elkhouly

Mr. Amr Elkhouly is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Trauma and Orthopaedics and is a member of both the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS). Additionally, he is a faculty member for the Miller’s International Orthopaedic FRCS teaching course in Oxford, UK.

His surgical expertise spans the diagnosis and treatment of both paediatric orthopaedic conditions and adult limb reconstruction.

Amr has completed three national specialist fellowships at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool University Hospital, Southampton University Hospital, and the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He has also undertaken an international fellowship in limb reconstruction at the Ilizarov Institute in Kurgan, Russia, focusing on limb deformities, as well as training at the International Paediatric Orthopaedic Symposium organized by the Paediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA).

His sub-specialty interests include:

Paediatric Orthopaedics:

•   Management of paediatric hip conditions, including congenital hip dislocation/dysplasia, Perthes’ disease, and SUFEs, as well as other paediatric hip disorders.

•   Expertise in paediatric foot and ankle deformities, such as clubfoot, cavovarus foot, flatfoot, and midfoot/forefoot deformities. He also treats lower limb deformities, including leg length discrepancies, bow legs, knock knees, and both congenital and developmental angular and rotational deformities.

•   Management of paediatric lower limb deformities using various treatment methods, including the Ponseti method for clubfoot, serial casting, splints, and surgical interventions such as guided growth, distraction osteogenesis, and corrective osteotomy for angular or rotational deformities using internal or external fixation (circular frames).

•   Treatment of paediatric sports injuries and fractures, with a particular focus on soft tissue injuries of the knee, including meniscal and ligament injuries, and their surgical management.

Adult Orthopaedics:

•   Lower limb joint preservation and replacement surgery, with expertise in treating adult lower limb deformities and osteoarthritis (both degenerative and traumatic). His treatments range from joint injections and arthroscopy to corrective joint preservation and joint replacement surgeries, including knee and hip arthroplasty.

•   Lower limb reconstruction surgery, specializing in the treatment of angular and rotational malalignment, limb length discrepancies, and reconstruction using internal or external fixation devices.

•   Treatment of knee soft tissue injuries, offering a variety of approaches including surgical repair of cartilage injuries and ligament reconstructions, with a focus on ACL reconstruction and patellofemoral joint pathologies.

Amr also leads the Orthopaedic Simulation Centre at the Royal Berkshire NHS Trust and is a Senior Lecturer for the Brunel Medical School-Brunel University London, where he serves as the Block and Module Lead for the Musculoskeletal module for Year 3 medical students.

Throughout his career, Amr has been actively involved in teaching and research, presenting at numerous international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Outside of work, Amr is an avid basketball player. He has represented his country at the international level, earning several gold medals, and is a proud supporter of the Reading Rockets basketball team.
